Update

It has been
a few years since we raised the membership rates and to be able to continue with
the work of the Dorset Bird Club it has been decided to increase subscriptions
from 1 January 2007. Single membership will be £12, joint membership £16,
Student membership £7 and junior membership £4. If you pay by Standing
Order please ensure that you inform your bank of the change. We look forward to
your continued support, which is really appreciated.
Who
Are We?
The Dorset Bird
Club is a non-profit making club run by people, both keen birdwatchers and conservation
professionals, who care about Dorset's birds, its habitats and other wildlife.
What
Do We Do?
We work for Dorset's
birds by carrying out bird recording and surveys in the County. By collating records
sent in by many individuals and site managers/observers we are able to present
an annual picture of the County's birds. By carrying out specific surveys we are
able to monitor changes in bird numbers and distribution. At a time when many
'common' species, such as the song thrush, the grey partridge and even the humble
house sparrow, are in decline it is very important to know what is happening with
our bird population.
We
use this information, often working with others, to actively promote conservation
measures to ensure that our birds can survive and thrive in the County. Partnership
working is very important and we have strong links with, amongst others, the RSPB,
the BTO and the Dorset Wildlife Trust.
We
are a bird watching club where like minded people can get together and just enjoy
the bird life in our County.
Covered
in a DBC annual subscription is a copy of the Dorset Bird Report.
The Report
is a systematic list of the previous years' sightings and includes a series of
articles on topics such as accounts of species new to Dorset, conservation surveys
and reviews of species spreads/declines in the County.
A newsletter,
packed with the latest County bird news and articles on birding in Dorset and
beyond, is sent to all members three times a year.
A programme of field
meetings, often visiting sites which are closed to the public and indoor meetings
with lectures and occasional quizzes, are run throughout the year.
Small
grants (£25-£300) from the Dorset Bird Club Conservation Fund are
available to anyone who is working to further the interests of Dorset's birds,
(please ask for an application form/list of terms).
Discounts are available
to members on purchases from a selection of local shops, including photographic
equipment, books and outdoor clothing.
